Can you describe the “Literacy” Block?

"I must first teach her language."

~ Annie Sullivan, "The Miracle Worker" 1979

Competency in reading and writing is the basis of western civilization. Traditional classrooms are rarely able to devote sufficient time to this foundational life skill. Using the workshop model, connecting to a student’s interests, and taking much of the pressure off, will allow students to flourish as readers and writers. Literacy is more than just the mechanics of reading and writing. A literate child is able to comprehend all types of text and is able to contribute their own ideas to discussion.

What is the “Arithmetic and Logic” Block?

"Mathematics is the language with which God has written the universe."

~ Galileo Galilei, "Il Saggiatore" 1623

We balance traditional mathematics with subjects like financial literacy and statistics. In the learning block, students will engage in a variety of activities to deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts. They may solve problems, complete worksheets, participate in hands-on experiments, and use manipulatives to visualize abstract concepts. Our curriculum is designed to encourage critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and logical reasoning.

In addition to regular lessons, the Old Schoolhouse's math block often incorporates real-world applications of math to make the subject more relevant and engaging. Students may explore how math is used in everyday situations, such as budgeting, cooking, measuring, and understanding data. This practical approach helps students see the relevance of math in their lives and develop a strong foundation for future learning.

What is the “Environment” Block?

"To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born, is to remain always a child. For what is the worth of human life, unless it is woven into the life of our ancestors by the records of history?"

                            ~ Cicero

"Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less."

                            ~ Marie Curie, 1903

In short, the traditional “History” and “Science” subjects would fit within this learning space. But, in thinking about these subjects differently, we focus on the idea that the environment is, in itself, a “teacher.” The setting, both indoors and outdoors, provides hundreds, if not thousands, of learning opportunities in the context of History, Social Studies, and Science. We will start with a focus on noticing the space, caring for the space, and using the space in the most vibrant way.

The majority of lessons will be taught through projects – both large scale and individualized. We will have a materials library where students will be able to design projects using our supplies. Teachers will make sure that students work out of personal passions and interests, but that they are also introduced to fascinating stories and new scientific topics along the way.

What about specialist classes like Art, Music, or Languages?

"Art is simply an alternate form of communication."

                             ~ Lili Kraus, 1984

Our Practical Arts Block includes group activities in the performing and visual arts, which we believe are an integral part of childhood brain development. Opportunities for participation in visual and fiber arts, music, dance, and drama will be taught by our highly qualified teachers.

Our practical arts will include fiber arts, crafting, gardening, cooking, forestry, botany, and much more.
